Concepts of Literacy

According the ACRL, information literacy is a set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information   (ACRL, 2019) . This week’s reading gave me a better understanding of these three concepts.    Information literacy is a very important skill that all students should begin learning in their K-12 years. According to the article entitled, “ Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, “  Librarians have a greater responsibility in identifying core ideas within their own knowledge domain that can extend learning for students, in creating a new cohesive curriculum for information literacy, and in collaborating more extensively with faculty.”   The use of digital/media, and technology is what create information literacy. As librarians, we are the schools most reliable information literacy experts. Our job is to give students better opportunity to develop literacy skills. AASL vs ISTE Standards                        This week’s readings provided me with a clear overview of both the AASL( American Association of School Librarians) and ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) standards and how beneficial both sets of standards can be in a learning environment. First, I took a look at the article entitled, “ 65 Years & Counting AASL and School Librarians.   There were a number of issues that I read about that we are still facing today as librarians.   One issue that I face often as a librarian is the challenge to a library book. There are so many books that my students would love to read. However, based on the topics that the books discuss, I am certain that administration would never approve.
